Here at Fig & Pickle, we are passionate about the environment and want to create less waste by using more eco-friendly products. Isn’t everyone concerned about this, we think to ourselves…? Well, not so much. It just seems to be something that a lot of people don’t bother with. Maybe you are one of these people, thinking you can’t make a difference, and if you did, surely all these trendy eco-friendly products would cause disruption to your day. Maybe if I throw a few scary stats your way you might change your mind?

What if I told you that an area larger than China is used to grow food that never gets eaten? Or that if this food waste was a country, it would be the third largest emitter of greenhouse gases behind only China and the US?

How about if I told you about Earth Overshoot Day, the day each year where humanity has depleted all of our planets’ renewable resources? In 2018, this day has already been and gone. In just 30 years we have jumped almost 3 months to August 1st!

Still wondering how you can make a difference, and whether it would cause you hassle and money to do so? Here, we have listed 5 eco-friendly products you can start using today that will have no negative impact on your life, but a great one to the environment if we all start to follow suit. You don’t need to start bathing in dirty water, or spending a fortune on solar panels to make a difference.

  1. Steel Straws

Plastic straws are only responsible for 0.03% of rubbish in oceans, but you only have to watch this horrifying clip (click at your own risk) on youtube of a plastic straw lodged up a sea turtle’s nostril to see that they have a terrible effect on our marine life. You can buy a pack of eco-friendly steel straws for next to nothing, they are reusable, and easy to carry round in your bag for use outside of the home too. You can even pop them in the freezer to keep the summer cocktails cold for longer. We love these ones on Amazon, as they come with a cleaning brush and pouch! Going plastic-free is an extremely difficult thing to contemplate today, but this is an easy step you can take.

2. The OLIO app

The Olio App

If you don’t already have this app on your phone, get it now! Olio is a food sharing revolution that was launched on the App Store in 2015, and has just hit 600,000 users. If you’re about to go on holiday, about to start a diet, or just bought way too much on your weekly shop, rather than throwing everything away, you can simply snap a photo, upload to Olio, and share with thousands of other users who may want your items. I’ve already mentioned some of the horrifying stats on food waste, and Olio is the only app allowing users to share with their community, all for free! Its a global app too, so wherever you are, take a look at their website for more info.

3. Reusable Coffee Cups

I know this ones kind of obvious but so few people are doing it! Not only is this one good for the environment, but its quickly becoming common practice for coffee shops to give you a discount when you bring your own cup. Starbucks and Costa are already doing it so not only will this help the environment, but the cup you choose (and there are plenty to choose from), will pay for itself over time!

4. Reusable Shopping bags

Again, why isn’t everyone using these? We all have a stash of plastic bags somewhere in the house that hardly ever get reused. Our landfills are filling up, the ocean is filling up, and yet the average American continues to throw away 307 plastic bags a year! Invest in a few good quality canvas shopping bags and never have to stuff another plastic bag into your cupboard again. There is an abundance of choice on Amazon, to fashion shops, and even supermarkets themselves, so you can look stylish whilst helping our planet.

5.  These Lush Shampoo Bars

These not only smell amazing but come packaging free! They can outlast more than 2 regular shampoo bottles, providing up to 80 washes with just one bar! They’re cruelty free, and come in a range of smells to satisfy even the pickiest of shampooers.

Of course, I have to give a quick mention to our own products, which are both battery free! Check them out here. I hope some of these products have caught your fancy, and maybe make you think about starting to make some very small changes to your lifestyle today.
